Making a difference to the families who come through our doors
Volunteers make a difference to the families and their children who rely on our services. From cooking, cleaning, comforting or by simply being there and helping out in any way, volunteers help us care for our families.
Shari Lee Hamond just loves her English Springer Spaniel, Gates! He is a cutie and very protective of Shari. These days, you can find Shari volunteering at the Ronald McDonald Family Room inside Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces, NM. Shari is pictured here with our brand new Hospitality Cart.Italian food is her all time favorite to eat and prepare. While Italian cuisine can be very filling, Shari doesn’t worry to much about the calories because one her hobbies is tap dancing. Wow!Shari relaxes by playing the piano. She enjoys genres like, Ragtime, Blues and just a little Country sometimes. When she plays the piano, Shari usually ends up dancing, so reading a good Mystery really helps her to relax.Volunteering has always been a huge part of Shari’s daily life. Most of the time, she’d work during the day and volunteer after work. Shari enjoys volunteering in hospitals and is a strong supporter of the arts and volunteers in this industry, too.We are are happy to have Shari represent Ronald McDonald House Charities of El Paso as a volunteer. Without volunteers like Shari, we could not continue our mission of Keeping Families Close to their critically ill child by providing a home-away-from-home while their child receives medial care.
Andy Monahan from Watersong Furniture in Albuquerque NM designed The Hospitality Cart.
The Hospitality Cart is an extension of The Ronald McDonald Family Room Program. It offers support to families of children who are unable to leave their child’s bedside. It is stocked with small meals, snacks, refreshments, and activity kits. Family Room volunteers will travel within the NICU and Pediatric departments offering comfort and support to families.
We really need great people like you to volunteer in our Ronald McDonald Family Rooms located inside Providence Children’s Hospital and Memorial Medical Center. Contact Rachel today to learn more: 915.542.1522 | rgarcia@rmhcelp.org.
Meet Gerard O’Brien. Gerard is all about serving others. His career paths have led him on an impressive journey of service. We are grateful to have Gerard as a Ronald McDonald House Charities of El Paso (RMHC-El Paso) Volunteer assigned to our Ronald McDonald Family Rooms. Our Family Rooms are located inside The Hospitals of Providence Children’s Hospital in El Paso and Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruses.
When Gerard is not serving others, you can find him relaxing on the water fishing for trout, bass and more. We are certain he’ll have his two loyal furry side-kicks, Teddy and Patches in tow. Gerard says it is very important to him that he gives back to the community he is a part of. One of his favorite quotes is actually a scripture. “. . . Love the Lord your God with all your heart . . . Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” Gerard has built his life around this concept.
Gerard does make time to pick up a good book every now and then. A novel he likes to read a lot is, “The Old Man and the Sea” by Ernest Hemmingway. When it comes to good movies and films, Gerard has the Oscar winning movie, Shindlers List at the top of his list.
While we admire Gerard for his outstanding service to others, he says, “If I had to pick one person that I admire, that inspires me, that person would be former President John F. Kennedy. I admire President Kennedy’s courage in the face of adversity because in the face of adversity is when being brave really matters most.”
We mentioned that Gerard's career paths led him on an impressive journey of service to others. Take a look at Gerard’s journey and be inspired. Thank you, Gerard for your service. We are grateful to call you a RMHC-El Paso volunteer:
